Case Study – Cleveland Medical Mart Plaza Deck

Cleveland Medical Mart Plaza Deck

In 2007, Cleveland’s commissioners decided to build a medical mart downtown Cleveland, Ohio, near Brown Stadium and Rock Hall of Fame. Two roads cross above where the medical mart was designed to be, and limited weight was allowed to be placed on top of the building at ground level due to structural limits of the building. Rather than limit the design options, engineers turned to Elevation® Geofoam. Elevation Geofoam is an engineered fill that weighs 1-3 pounds per cubic foot versus soil, which weighs 100-120 pounds per cubic foot. The geofoam used in the medical mart varied from 5″ to 84″ thick, covered by a drainage layer, and 12-24″ of soil to support the growing medium. The result is a beautiful downtown green space that adds to the city’s character.
